Cinematic Slant

Cinematic Slant is where I write about movies, including the campaign recaps I’ve been doing since 2004 along with other news and opinions.

Get Out – After the Campaign Review: While the marketing campaign didn’t sell every twist, turn and revelation it did accurately sell the overall tone of the movie. And watching the trailer again I was surprised by just how much of the story actually was on display, though there was little way to know how those elements were going to play out.

Proud Mary – Marketing Recap: From the lack of significant advertising and publicity push to the way the marketing didn’t seem interested in sharing details of the story, there’s not much of an effort here to sell the movie with any sort of appeal beyond the action and violence.

Movies Are Stuck Without Playlists: The streaming and VOD movie ecosystem lacks features allowing me to go in and create a curated list of my top Will Ferrell comedies. Or a list of “Chris’ Essential Documentaries” that I can then turn to myself when looking for something to watch or share with others.

The Polka King – Marketing Recap: Netflix is selling this as a true story featuring a slightly over-the-top performance by Black. Understandably, given his name recognition and reputation, he’s at the center of the campaign from beginning to end. If you’re not a fan, there’s nothing here for you.

Reginald Hudlin – Director Overview: Since I didn’t get to it at the time around Marshall’s release, I’m taking this opportunity to correct and oversight and look at the trailers for Hudlin’s feature directorial work.
