(NOTE: I consider myself a good writer, but good only gets better by practice. So I’ve signed up for the WordPress Everyday Inspiration schedule to prompt me to write something different every day. This is the result of today’s nudge.)

This is a hard question to answer. In certain circumstances yes, I’m optimistic that things are going to turn out well, regardless of the situation. Most times that’s certainly the case, at least more than it’s not.

But overall I don’t consider myself an optimistic person. I think I have a pretty gloomy outlook on things, actually, and often feel like nope, we’re all going to die miserably or at least that the breaks just won’t go our way.

I think what I am is a situational optimist. If I’m left to my own thoughts then they’re going to gravitate toward the worst, most disastrous outcome I can imagine. But if someone asks me what’s going to happen, I’ll say “It’ll be alright” and I genuinely believe that because that’s what German Lutherans do.

If you’re looking to plan for the worst possible scenario, I’m your cynic. If you’re looking to be reassured that everything will be fine in the end, I’m your optimist.
