Twitter keeps trying to make up for time lost while it ignored Direct Messages by adding more features to the messaging tool, this time adding read receipts, “…is typing” indicators and the ability to preview links shared in messages. This brings it in line with other messaging tools like Facebook Messenger, iMessage and more.
Read receipts have not been received well by those on Twitter, who see it as another way harassers will get some validation when they pester and abuse their victims. Those receipts can be turned off, but it’s still an issue. And it still doesn’t get to the fact that DMs are legitimately something that can and should be broken out from the core Twitter experience to make the experience for both that much better.
