Adulting is hard. It’s also a fairly new word being used to describe basically any activity that we don’t want to do but know is necessary. This can be anything from the relatively trivial (making sure the fridge is stocked with something other than queso and beer) to the substantial (going to work, making sure the kids are dressed and fed). As someone who’s been doing it for a while – I’m 41 – I can attest to the fact that it doesn’t get easier. There are still a fair amount of days where I don’t want to adult but instead want to just sit on the couch watching Animaniacs and to hell with the rest of it.
The new movie Get A Job is about a couple that just doesn’t want to, or at least doesn’t seem quite ready to, adult. The movie, which was shot in 2012 but is only coming out now, stars Miles Teller and Anna Kendrick as Will and Jillian as a couple who are trying to get their post-college lives underway. But they’re both finding that the workplace isn’t quite as friendly as they were hoping for as they alternate through getting and losing jobs and trying to do manage on their own. So they try to get by with support from each other, their families and a group of friends who aren’t any more clued-in than they are.
You can pretty much see what you’re getting into on the first poster. Teller and Kendrick are just standing there half-smiling at the camera while she holds a box of items like she’s just taken off her desk after getting fired: A lamp, a plant, a coffee mug and more. At the top there’s copy that tells us “Graduating was the easy part.”
Yes, it gets the point across and it’s a bit much to expect a movie that’s sat on the shelves for four years is going to get something hugely original. But this is just about as lazy in terms of one-sheet design as you can get. It’s just the two stars and some props along with a vague tagline.
The trailer sets up the movie and its basic premise pretty well. Will and Gillian are a young couple trying to make it on their own. But while she has a job the one he was expecting doesn’t pan out, setting him on the course to trying to raise cash and get a new one. When he does, though, she loses hers. So the situation is reversed and she winds up moving into the house Will shares with his slacker buddies. The trailer ends with Gillian seemingly accepting her place in the world at the moment.
It’s an alright trailer. Again, it does a good job of establishing the characters and the story and the conflict that will drive everything forward. I can’t say this looks like the year’s best movie but Teller (when he’s not trying to be a super hero) is charming enough and Kendrick is always fun to watch. Looks, for lack of a better phrase, pleasant enough.
Online and Social
The nearest thing I could find to an official online presence for the movie was this page on the CBS Films site. There you’ll find the poster, a few stills and a brief synopsis but that’s about it. There is also a Facebook page for the movie that had video clips, countdown images, graphics where the cast shared their worst job experiences and so on. Not much, but it’s better than the CBS site.

As I said before, it’s not bad for a movie that’s been on hold for four years. There’s nothing here that’s going to blow anyone’s doors off and it takes the easy way out on a lot of fronts. But the trailer sells what looks to be a totally pleasant video-on-demand rental. It makes the case that hey, these two leads have some decent charm and charisma and the story isn’t going to task your mental facilities too much so come on in and enjoy.
The story looks decent enough and might even be relatable by those outside of the early- to mid-20s demographic it’s more or less aimed at. There are probably more than a couple genuine laughs in there as the two leads fumble their way through one adulting situation they’re not prepared for after another. I’m not expecting anything revolutionary and some of the dialogue in the clips is a bit groan-worthy, but if it’s as light and breezy as the marketing suggests it could be some fun.
