What’s the future of Posterous?

posterous-logoThe future doesn’t look great for Posterous. A new feature allowing folks to export their posts is being interpreted by some as signs the platform is not long for this world, particularly combined with the fact that there’s little to no dedicated team supporting it since most of them have been subsumed into Twitter.

Posterous fell victim to being launched in a weird time. There was already a service, Tumblr, that was doing what it was trying to do, which is act as a lightweight blog platform for people who wanted to primarily post multimedia material. And after it launched Tumblr, which had been dipping in popularity at the time, began to grow again and become a major platform that attracted not only personal publishers but lots of media and advertiser attention.
